Playgroup (2+ years) - A Safe and Joyful First Step
Starting school is a big moment, for children and parents alike. At LSL Junior School, our early years program in Lahore makes this transition as smooth and joyful as possible. Our Playgroup school in Gulberg is designed to introduce young children to a structured yet playful learning environment where they feel secure, celebrated, and inspired. The emphasis here is on communication and early language, social skills, independence, physical coordination and the very first steps towards reading and writing, all within a warm and welcoming environment where children begin to look forward to attending school.
Curriculum Highlights
- Language – speaking, listening, singing, answering, following instructions and steady vocabulary development
- Concepts – colours, shapes, numbers, animals, plants, transport, body parts, fruits and vegetables
- Skills – hand-eye coordination, pasting, colouring, tearing paper, sorting, matching, and working with puzzles and weaving boards (Montessori-style Exercises of Practical Life, or EPL)
School Day
The day starts at 08:30 am and ends at noon. All the areas of the curriculum are taught through games, activities, play, experience and language. Every morning the children are welcomed warmly by their teachers, they hang up their bags by recognising their name tags on the hooks.
The first period is a group session which consists of singing, talking about their activities and discussing the concepts of the curriculum.
This is followed by outdoor play which includes riding tricycles, exercises, ball play, races and free play.
On their return to the classroom some activities are selected either for skill development or for concept reinforcement.
The snack break is next; children eat under supervision with emphasis on table manners. This is a great opportunity for social skills practice. At the end they are helped to put away their lunch boxes and clean up. They learn to use a brush and pan to remove crumbs from the floor.
Another activity follows and then a story telling session ends the day.
Throughout the day they are with teachers who are soft spoken, gentle, encouraging and very generous with their affection and patience.
The ever present Ayahs take care of their physical needs, (washing, using the toilet, changing) and always provide help and comfort.
This is the base of all the following so there is no hurry here. All it takes is a little practice, repetition and plenty of encouragement.

Kindergarten (5+ years) - The Bridge to Class 1

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the right age for a child to start a Playgroup?
Children are usually ready to join Playgroup once they turn 2 years old, with entry age calculated as of September 1st each year. At this stage, we’re not looking for any particular skill — just a child who’s ready for a warm, supervised environment away from home for a few hours a day.
What is the actual difference between Pre-Nursery, Nursery, and KG?
Each class builds on the one before it. Pre-Nursery (3+ years) focuses on communication, independence, and early letter and number recognition through play. Nursery (4+ years) starts introducing structured reading, writing, and counting up to 100, along with basic Urdu. KG (5+ years) is the most formal of the three, with children writing full sentences and short paragraphs, doing written classwork, essentially preparing them for Class 1.
Do you use screens or worksheets with younger children?
Not with our younger classes. In Playgroup and Pre-Nursery especially, learning happens through games, stories, art, sensory play, and hands-on activities — no screen time and no worksheet drilling. Written work is introduced gradually, starting lightly in Nursery and becoming a regular part of the day by KG.
What does a typical day look like?
It depends on the class. Playgroup runs from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, Nursery from 7:50 am to 1:00 pm, and KG from 7:50 am to 2:00 pm (Pre-Nursery timings sit between Playgroup and Nursery). Every day includes a mix of group lessons, outdoor play, snack time, and activity periods — the exact structure just gets a little more formal as children move up.
Is Urdu taught alongside English?
Yes. Urdu is formally introduced from Nursery onwards, starting with simple words that don’t require much letter-joining. By KG, children are reading, writing, and building sentences in both English and Urdu.
Where is LSL Junior School located?
Our Pre-School campus is in Gulberg, one of Lahore’s most established and easily accessible neighbourhoods, which makes daily drop-offs and pickups straightforward for most families in the surrounding areas.
How do you keep parents involved and updated?
We treat parents as partners rather than outsiders. Teachers share daily updates, hold regular parent meetings, and maintain an open-door policy, so you always have a clear picture of how your child is settling in and progressing.
Does LSL follow a fixed curriculum, or is it flexible for each child?
There’s a clearly structured curriculum for every class, developed and overseen by our Pre-School Coordinator, so children build skills in a logical sequence year on year. Within that structure, though, teachers adjust pacing and activities to how individual children are progressing — it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach.
